Gov. Brad Henry has granted clemency to Kevin Young, sparing him from execution.

VIDEO: Gov. Henry Grants Clemency To Young

The state Pardon and Parole Board urged the governor earlier this month to spare his life. Young, 43, was scheduled to die Aug. 21 for the May 1996 killing of 56-year-old Joseph Sutton at a gambling room inside a northeast Oklahoma City steakhouse.

Henry commuted Young's death sentence Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

During the clemency hearing, an apologetic Young told parole board members he has become a Christian and believes he can still be of service to society from prison.
