High Gas Prices Could Lead To Road Construction Delays

ODOT: 6,000 Job Cuts Possible

Despite a recently passed $300 million bond to fix roads, approved by Oklahoma lawmakers late in their 2008 session, officials with Oklahoma's Department of Transportation warn projects could be delayed.

ODOT officials are working with Congress to plan for what is expected to be a lack of federal funds for construction projects, caused by high gas prices. The future of some ODOT projects and thousands of jobs are in jeopardy, officials said, because not enough federal gas tax money is coming in.

ODOT spokeswoman Terri Angier explained that because gas taxes are flat, "we get the same amount whether we pay $4 or $10 for gas."

As gas prices go up, consumers drive less, which means the trust fund that contributes to state highway projects has less money. ODOT officials said they could get $172 million less in federal dollars starting as early as 2010.

They are projecting more than 6,000 job cuts in the highway construction industry, meaning projects could be delayed.

"They are needed projects. So, what is going to have to happen -- depending how the funding shakes out -- you have to balance it out over a long period, which means it could be a year delay over here and there for some of the projects," Angier said.

ODOT officials said they should know as early as September what projects will be a part of its eight-year plan.
