Free Landfill Day Announced For OKC Residents

Event Set For Sept. 6 Between 7 A.M., 3 P.M.

POSTED: 2:20 pm CDT August 11, 2008

Buy a new washing machine, and the old one is still on the back porch? Or cut down a tree as part of your landscaping project? Maybe you need to clean out the garage but have no place to put all the junk until bulk-waste day.

Well, here's the answer: Take the old junk or debris to a landfill between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Sept. 6. It's Free Landfill Day, and it's offered to Oklahoma City residents only. No commercial account holders or commercial waste haulers will be allowed.

Each household may drop off one load using a passenger vehicle or a single-axle truck up to one ton and one trailer up to 16 feet. A current original water bill (no photocopies accepted) is required as proof of residency.

Bulk-waste rules and regulations also apply to Free Landfill Day. That means no appliances containing Freon or other refrigerants, household hazardous waste, tires, oils, car batteries, dirt and rocks, propane tanks, pool chemicals, electronic waste.

While you're out and about with your trash that day, drop old paint, pesticides, fertilizers and such off at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility at 1621 S. Portland. For a complete list of household hazardous waste, go to www.okc.gov or call 682-7038. For more information about Free Landfill Day, call Utility Customer Services at 297-2833.

Participating landfills:
- East Oak Landfill - 3201 Mosley Rd. (N.E. 36, east of Sooner Road, south side of street)
- Oklahoma City Landfill d/b/a Southeast Landfill - 7001 S. Bryant
- Oklahoma Landfill d/b/a Waste Connections - 7600 SW 15
- Northeast Landfill - 2601 N. Midwest Boulevard, Spencer, Okla. (construction and demolition materials only)
