What You Need In Case Of Emergency

POSTED: 3:20 pm CDT July 28, 2008

The month of July is home safety month and you need to think about what to do in case of an emergency. The Oklahoma City-County Health Department wants you to know how to start preparing you and your family before an unexpected emergency arises. You can start by using the 4 steps on getting ready for an emergency:

Step 1. Get a kit of emergency supplies.
a. Water - one gallon per person per day.
b. Food - at least a three day supply of non-perishable food.
c. Battery-powered radio and extra batteries.
d. Flashlight and extra batteries.
e. First Aid kit.
f. Whistle to signal for help.
g. Dust mask.
h. Moist towlettes for sanitation.
i. Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities.
j. Manual can opener.
k. Garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation.
l. Unique family needs. At least a seven day supply of medications along with a list of medications, how often to take the medication and how much.
m. Matches.
n. Phone that plugs into the wall. (It will still work if the lights go out).

Step 2. Make a Plan for you and your family on what you will do in an emergency.

Step 3. Be informed about what might happen.

Step 4. Get involved in preparing your community.
